Part of Ryan's adventure in Travel
Written Sunday night on I65 north of Birmingham. Heading home. Listening to some FFH using John’s Bose headsets. I like them very much.
Where to start? So much has happened in the last 27 hours How do I blog it? Do I post a run down of events, a few highlights, or an in depth look at my innermost thoughts and feelings. The later isn’t going to happen. I’m not sure what all those are yet. Many are conflicting. I have a really hard time identifying highlights because everything is connected and if I just pull bits and pieces out I’m really not giving an accurate picture. No one really wants to read a run down. It lacks the personal touch and takes a long time. Normally I would probably just not do anything, but I know I shouldn’t do that. I guess I will just post pictures and highlight some observations, thoughts and experience..
Why does everyone sensationalize risk and danger so much? We heard stories from “reliable” sources that is was dangerous in Biloxi. Supposedly people were mobbing relieve vehicles and it was madness. We didn’t experience any of there. I never felt like I was in any danger. People were standing in orderly lines to get supplies. The gas lines were orderly. People were behaving civilly. I wonder how much of the portrait of N.O. is accurate. I had similar experiences on my trips to the Philippines and Israel.
The cheapest gas on the trip was in Mobile Alabama ($2.47.) No price gouging there. The line was only about 5 minutes long. The truck was unloading when we pulled in. The line was much longer when we pulled out. we ran into a group of officers from Cook County Illinois. They were brining a load of water down and were going to work for a while. They were putting their vests on which was a little bit disconcerting (note my previous paragraph)
We stumbled on an awesome church. It was the only church on the coast still standing. Other congregations from as far away as Tenn were brining people and supplies. I heard rumor of a congregation bringing stuff from as far away and California later this week. The people took us in gave the guys some great audio which will get used next week. We didn’t have a place to stay and were considering spending the night in the truck but a family opened their house to us. There wasn’t power but they had running water, and generator for some fans, and plenty of hospitality. We feasted on bar-b-q shrimp and fresh iced tea.
John and I drove around town assessing the damage. It is bad, but not hopeless. There are a lot of houses still standing and with minimal damage. People seem to be in good spirits and pulling through.
We stopped in Hattiesburg to check out the work of Spring Lake based International Aid. They are setting up a transfer station taking in loads of supplies from 53’ trailers, dividing it into smaller trucks and sending it down to where it is needed.
The trip north has been uneventful. We are just leaving Nashville. We should be stopping for the night in a little while. We hope to be in GR mid afternoon tomorrow. Ryan, over and out.
